Kennedy is elected over Richard M. Nixon, becoming the youngest man ever elected as President of the United States (he is 43). 1961 - Wayne gets his first job in the toy department of F. W. Woolworth dime store. January 20, 1961 - "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." John F. Kennedy is sworn in as the 35th President of the United States. April 12, 1961 - Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin is the first human in space. May 5, 1961 - Astronaut Alan B. Shepard is first American in space. July 1961 - Wayne buys his first car, a 1953 Plymouth. December 11, 1961 - Vietnam War officially begins as the first American helicopters arrive in Saigon along with 400 U.S. personnel. 1962 - Wayne is baptized for the 2nd time at Hopevale American Baptist Church. 1962 - Wayne begins working in the shoe department of Federal's department store. March 16, 1962 - Walter Cronkite becomes anchorman of the CBS Evening News. August 5, 1962 - Actress Marilyn Monroe dies at age 36 from an apparent overdose. October 14, 1962 - The Cuban Missile Crisis begins (ends on November 20th). March 21, 1963 - Alcatraz, a penitentiary on an island in San Francisco Bay, closes. June 1963 - Wayne graduates from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw. September 1963 - Wayne begins classes at Delta College in Saginaw, becoming the first Eastman to attend college. November 22, 1963 - President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Texas, allegedly by Lee Harvey Oswald. Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn-in as the 36th President. November 24, 1963 - Oswald is shot and killed by Jack Ruby on live national television. 1964 - Wayne's Cocker Spaniel, Taffy dies. January 13, 1964 - "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles is released in the United States. It will become their first North American hit and the beginning of Beatlemania. Wayne first hears the song a few weeks later. March 1964 - Wayne attempts to get a "Beatles Haircut" (he says he still has it in 2005). March 9, 1964 - The first Mustang rolls off the assembly line at Ford Motor Company. August 1964 - Wayne meets Rilla Kent, after she returns from a summer trip to England. November 3, 1964 - President Lyndon B. Johnson defeats challenger Barry Goldwater.
