April 1955 - Wayne's parents buy a cottage in the Les Cheneaux Islands in Michigan. April 18, 1955 - Scientist Albert Einstein dies. September 30, 1955 - Actor James Dean dies in an accident in a Porsche 550 Spyder. October 28, 1955 - Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft is born. 1956 - The first hard disk (5MB) is invented by IBM. 1956 - Wayne listens to Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel" with cousins Karen and Susan February 22, 1956 - Elvis Presley enters the music charts for the first time with "Heartbreak Hotel." June 14, 1956 - President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a bill into law that places the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance. June 29, 1956 - Marilyn Monroe marries playwright Arthur Miller. July 30, 1956 - A Joint Resolution of the United States Congress is signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, authorizing "In God We Trust" as the national motto. 1957 - IBM makes FORTRAN scientific programming language available to customers. It becomes the most widely used computer language for technical work. June 1, 1957 - Wayne's grandfather, Fred Archangeli dies. September 4, 1957 - Ford Motor Company introduces the Edsel. November 1, 1957 - Michigan's Mackinac Bridge opens. 1958 - The post-war baby boom ends in the United States as an eleven-year decline in the birth rate begins. 1958 - Wayne shakes hands with Vice President Richard Nixon through the Hemmeter school fence. January 31, 1958 - The first successful American satellite, Explorer I, is launched. August 6, 1958 - Wayne's great-grandmother, Anna (Benedetti) Archangeli dies. January 3, 1959 - Alaska is admitted as the 49th U.S. state. February 3, 1959 - Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper die in a plane crash. February 22, 1959 - Lee Petty wins the first Daytona 500. August 21, 1959 - Hawaii is admitted as the 50th U.S. state. November 2 , 1959 - "Twenty-One" game show contestant Charles Van Doren admits that he had been given questions and answers in advance.
