A DECADE IN REVIEW 1945-1954

April 12, 1945 - President Franklin Delano Roosevelt dies 96 days into his 4th term. Vice President Harry S. Truman is sworn in as the 33rd President of the United States.

August 6, 1945 - The United States detonates an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan.

August 9, 1945 - An American B-29 drops a 2nd atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan.

August 12, 1945 - Wayne Alan Eastman is born.

August 15, 1945 - President Harry S. Truman declares V-J (Victory over Japan) Day, ending World War II.

October 10, 1945 - The Detroit Tigers defeat the Chicago Cubs in game 7 to win the World Series.

January 10, 1946 - The United Nations holds its first meeting.

June 6, 1946 - The Basketball Association of America is formed in New York City. It will later become the NBA.

July 5, 1946 - The bikini is introduced in Paris. Not accepted in the U.S. until the 1950's.

September 17, 1946 - Wayne's great-grandmother, Elizabeth (Lutz) Eastman dies.

February 21, 1947 - In New York City, Edwin Land demonstrates the first "instant camera", the Polaroid Land Camera, to a meeting of the Optical Society of America.

April 15, 1947 - Jackie Robinson, an African-American, takes the field at 1st base for the Brooklyn Dodgers major-league baseball team, breaking the color line.

July 7, 1947 - Downed UFO believed to be found in the Roswell UFO incident.

October 3, 1947 - Wayne becomes a big brother. His sister Cheryl is born.

October 14, 1947 - Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier in a Bell X-1.

November 25, 1947 - The "Hollywood 10" are blacklisted by movie studios because of allegations of Communist influence in the movie industry.

1948 - Wayne and family move to their new home on Shattuck Road.

January 5, 1948 - Warner Brothers shows the first color newsreel.

August 16, 1948 - Baseball great Babe Ruth dies.

November 2, 1948 - Harry S. Truman defeats Thomas E. Dewey for the US presidency.

November 28, 1948 - Wayne's sister JoAnne is born.

January 5, 1949 - U.S. President Harry S. Truman unveils his Fair Deal program.

March 1, 1949 - World heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis retires.

August 25, 1949 - RCA announces development of a compatible color TV system.

August 28, 1949 - The last 6 surviving veterans of the Civil War meet in Indianapolis.
