FIRST HOME

In order to tell the story of Wayne's first home, we must go back to May 29, 1942. This is the date that Lloyd Eastman married Lois Archangeli, a girl he had grown up with. The couple moved into an apartment on 7th and Carrol in Saginaw. Their second apartment was on Oakly in Saginaw, where they stayed until they moved into the home of Bob and Kate Archangeli, Lois's brother. Bob was away in World War II. Their first child, Wayne, was born while the couple lived in this house. When Bob returned from the war, Lois, Lloyd and Wayne moved to the upstairs of Lloyd's parent's house on Bond Street and then bought a lot at 4095 Shattuck Road in Saginaw. They alternated living at the Eastman and Archangeli parents' houses while they built their house on Shattuck. The reason for the switching around was that the upstairs of the Eastman house was very hot in the summer and Lois was uncomfortable living there during her pregnancies with Cheryl and JoAnne.

Building materials were scarce after the war and no one delivered anything. If you found some supplies, you had to buy them right then and it was up to you to get them to the building site. Lloyd had only his 1937 Chevy and a trailer to transport wood, brick, concrete blocks, shingles and everything else needed to build the house. Construction moved along slowly as no electric power lines had been strung during part of the construction. Many cuts were made with Lloyd's handsaw.

The house was under roof, with heating and plumbing by late 1948 when Lois and Lloyd decided to move in. The upstairs was not complete and the three children slept in what is now the dining room. The house was finally completed in the early 1950's. A two-car detached garage was added in the mid 1950's, and a family room in the early 1980's.

{Editor's Note: Much of the above was taken from a pamphlet written by Wayne in November 2002 which was handed out at Lloyd's funeral.}

And now back to our story ... Wayne's first "home." What is it that makes a house a home? It's not the bricks or tile or cabinets. It's the love and memories that occur inside the walls. And given this description, 4095 Shattuck Road, Saginaw, Michigan was definitely Wayne's first home.
